• They demonstrate that opposition to the actions of the government is widespread and legitimate and they give social permission to others to join.

• They help us affirm our rights by exercising them.

• They lay the foundation for other forms of action like economic boycotts and strikes.

• They create opportunities for people to cooperate and they combat isolation and despair.

• They generate feelings of solidarity.

• They impact voter turnout and electoral outcomes.

But protests are not enough.
